A little about me:
I have not been an educator all of my professional life. In fact I’ve had many more years outside of education than in it. This, I feel, is beneficial to my teaching technique.
Truth be told, I never dreamed I’d end up teaching in the first place. If you had asked my teachers if they thought I’d grow up to be a educator someday, they’d all laugh, cry, or hide from the mere imagining of such an idea. Yup, I was that student.
That said, I feel my experiences as a challenging student helped to mold my style of teaching. I believe that making content relevant to students is the best way to peak their interest and ensure retention. On the other hand, as a former manager in the private sector, I also understand that sometimes you simply must push through the less exciting tasks, and that is an accomplishment in and of itself. This helps to shed light on my teaching philosophy: students need lessons that are important to their lives, even if they do not know it at the time, and school is about more than simply teaching content. As educators we are entrusted with the task of shaping responsible adults, who will, in turn, contribute positively to our society and world.
